The God Of All Grace

Blessed in Christ: Humility, Anxiety & Faith

Speaker: Marc McKinley

Anchor Verse: 1 Peter 5:6–11

What Does It Mean to Be Blessed?

When we hear the word blessing, most of us think about circumstances. Things going well. Life feeling smooth. Doors opening.

But Peter is writing to people whose lives were not easy. They were under pressure and in some cases suffering for their faith.

And still, he calls them blessed.

That tells us something important. Their blessing was not based on what was happening around them. It was based on who they belonged to.

If you are in Christ, you are already blessed. Not because life is easy, but because Jesus has saved you and your future is secure in Him.

That kind of blessing does not come and go.

The Posture of Humility

Peter calls believers to humility:

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand…”

Humility here is not about putting yourself down. It is about recognising that God is in control and we are not.

It is choosing to trust Him instead of trying to carry everything ourselves.

That sounds simple, but it cuts against how we naturally live. We like control. We like having a plan. We like knowing how things will work out.

Humility invites us to release that grip and trust that God knows what He is doing.

Casting Our Anxieties on God

Out of this posture of humility flows a powerful invitation:

“Cast all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.”

We all carry things. Stress. Pressure. Worry about the future. Things that sit in the back of our minds and things that keep us up at night.

And often, we try to handle it ourselves.

But Peter draws a clear contrast. The humble person brings those things to God. The prideful person keeps trying to manage them alone.

Casting your anxieties on God means actually handing them over. Not once, but again and again.

And the reason we can do that is simple. He cares for you.

Standing Firm Against the Enemy

Peter also gives a sober warning:

“Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion…”

Peter also reminds us that there is a real enemy.

He describes him as a roaring lion. Loud. Intimidating. Always looking for a way in. That is often how fear works. It feels big. It feels convincing.

But the key truth is this. The enemy has already been defeated. Through Jesus, his power has been broken. He can still make noise, but he does not have the final say over your life.

This is why Peter calls believers to:

“Resist him, standing firm in the faith.”

We do not stand firm in our own strength, but in the truth of what Christ has already accomplished.

Grace in the Midst of Suffering

Peter does not avoid the reality of suffering. He speaks directly into it.

And what he offers is not a quick solution, but a promise.

God’s grace meets us in difficult seasons.

Not just enough to get by, but enough to sustain us. Enough to carry us through.

You may not always feel it straight away. But over time, you begin to see it. God giving you strength. God helping you endure. God being present with you.

The God Who Restores

Peter closes with a powerful reminder of God’s character:

“And the God of all grace… will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

This is who God is.

He is not distant or indifferent. He is the God of all grace, the one who restores, strengthens, and establishes His people.

Whatever season we find ourselves in, this remains true:

  • God is at work

  • God is present

  • God will complete what He has begun

A Final Encouragement

This passage calls us to a simple but profound way of living:

  • To remember that our blessing is secure in Christ

  • To walk in humility before God

  • To entrust our anxieties to Him

  • To stand firm in faith against the enemy

  • To trust His grace in every season

This is not about striving harder, but about trusting deeper.

And in that place of trust, we find a steady, unshakable hope.
